Akai means red in Japanese, and that's the whole brief. Niklas Rückrich is the fourth generation on his family estate in Eckelsheim, Rheinhessen, and one of the most exciting young winemakers in Germany right now. The blend is 40% Dornfelder, 30% Spätburgunder and 30% Portugieser, each fermented on the skins with a share of whole bunches, rested eleven months on the lees and bottled by gravity, unfined and unfiltered.

Juicy, crunchy, low-alcohol red made for drinking cold. Sour cherry, herbs, zero pretension.

Drink with: barbecue, banh mi, or a hot afternoon.
